How to Talk So young Ones Will Listen to You
Every parent dreams of having a well-disciplined child. And one important part of instilling discipline to kids is by knowing how to talk to them so they will listen. This is very important because knowing how to talk to their children can teach them the proper way of talking and interacting with other people. 1. Approace kids in a positive light whenever you want to talk to them. This is true even if you are telling them about the thingsthey have done wrong. As much as possible, negative words like "don't" and "never" should not be used. One instance is when you want to let them know that running is not permitted in the house, so you say "running is for outside, walking is for inside", instead of "do not run inside the house".
2. Calm the kids down first if you want to talk to them, especially is you want to ask them to do something. A child that is emotionally settled is much easier to give directions and instructions to.
3. Always use your kid's name when talking to them. This is to show them that you take them seriously and make them feel more mature, resulting to having them respect you more and understand you easier.
4. Help kids make decisions; do not make it for them. Give room for them to think and pick the right option. Like when you want them to clean up their room, you can ask them what they want to do first: put away their toys or straighten up their books.
5. Just like adults, kids don't like being ordered, even coming from their parents. So you might want to rephrase your words when you want them to do something. You can use the phrase "I want" to make requests. For instance: "I want to see all your toys arrange properly". This technique will play up their need to please you as their parent.
6. When telling them "No", you should be firm. Don't change your mind. This will help them learn about rules and how they should follow them. Just always make sure that you have a valid reason for saying "No" to them. And you should also be able to explain this reason to them properly.
7. Avoid using complex words when talking to them; but avoid talking to them like they are stupid. Just use simple words that they can easily understand. This way, they will understand you better.
8. When asking them to do something a bit more complicated, it helps to have them repeat your instructions. This will ensure you that they really understood what you are saying. This will also give you a clue on what to expect from them.
9. Use polite words when talking to your kids. This way, you can teach them how to use these words when talking to you and other people.
10. Try listening to what your kids have to say. Communication between parents and children is not a one-way street. You should also learn how to hear them out when they have something to say.
